“Don’t film vertically!”
“It’s not the way video was meant to be watched.”
“You’re shooting with the wrong aspect ratios.”
“Video has always been shot in landscape for good reason.”
We’ve heard it all. We disagree.
Video has always been adapted to fit the device it is being consumed on. Landscape orientation is how video has traditionally been filmed, but only because it has always fit the traditional screens they were being watched on. That widescreen experience was broken when the smartphone became the screen of choice for this new generation. The conventional flawed reasoning behind years of horizontal wide screen design has been that wide dimensions somehow provide an optimal experience for consumers’ field of vision. But this has simply proven to not be true. The ultimate goal of content creators has always been to provide better viewing experiences for their viewers. It is relatively straightforward: the better a viewing experience, the more fulfillment a viewer gets from that form of entertainment. We firmly believe that it is time that we adapt content to fit the smartphone.
Content creators no longer want to distract their viewers by making them have to rotate their screens to get a full screen experience. That action would draw the viewer’s focus away from what matters: the video. If we hold our phones vertically 98% of the time, then evidently that is the position that feels most comfortable in our hands. As minimal as it sounds, users find it annoying to rotate their phones; and they don’t do it. Most of the time they even have their orientation lock enabled. In other words, users are not turning their phones and prefer to watch tiny videos surrounded by black bars rather than turn their phones. However, video should be a full-screen, captivating experience that is more engaging and immersive. The new generation is already starting to become accustomed full-screen vertical video and its prevalence will continue to rise due to these consumption habits.
We believe we have to look at this from a different perspective. The truth is…there has never been a right or wrong way to create and tell stories through captivating video. A story is a story no matter which aspect ratio its creator chooses to deliver his or her message. The most important thing is to always deliver a fully immersive experience. Just because vertical video is new or different, does not mean it’s wrong. We know it’s right. Once the first television was designed, the subsequent media content being filmed was optimized for that device. Everything that has been developed in the video industry until the modern era has been solely based around the aspect ratios and formatting of the world’s first ever viewing device: the television. From computer screens to projectors, they’ve all been horizontal just like the television. The T.V. created industries that changed the world we live in, and now we aim to explore a new way of optimizing content for preeminent devices in today’s new age.
We’ve hit a point in the evolution of video where rapid change is happening in front of all of us because of society’s new primary device for video consumption. Similar to the history of the television, once the smartphone becomes an even more integral part of society, products and services will start to flood around it pertinent to media specifically. A rise in mobile-first talent and content creators will spark a new revolution in video.
We believe that we are heading into a world where every traditional widescreen video will have a Tallscreen version to accompany it. We aim to fully immerse ourselves in this medium, and will continue to innovate by developing products and services that deliver audience-first content for mobile viewers. Tallscreen is on the forefront of this industry as a mobile-first technology company focused on creating more intimate video experiences for the next generation of mobile viewers.
